Organization description

Vancouver Public Schools is a public PK-12 school district that serves over 22,000 students in Vancouver, Washington.

Project description

Researchers, teachers, and community members have long noted the absence of BIPOC people in the history taught throughout our K-12 schools. Vancouver Public Schools recognizes the important role it must play in correcting this issue. The Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Grant would help us educate hundreds of 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th-grade educators on how to incorporate the critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills that come with using primary sources to solve history’s mysteries.

Our project has provided grade-level cohorts of teachers with opportunities to learn from noted historians on a variety of historical time periods and topics. The teacher cohorts were then provided the opportunity to collaborate and create instructional units and lessons that are aligned to grade-level standards, implement best practices, and utilize primary source documents.
