Organization description

The University of Michigan is a public research university. Within it, the School of Education focuses on educational research and preparing and supporting teachers.

Project description

Through partnership with middle school teachers and iterative design-based research, we have developed a set of 7 “disciplinary literacy” tools that structure routines for social studies inquiry and 15 investigations that use these tools to inquire into specific historical and social problems. These investigations have supported students in grades 6-8 in developing their disciplinary thinking, classroom discourse, and argument writing.
