Organization description

University of the Arts’ mission is simple: to advance human creativity. UArts believes creativity is the most essential skill for success in today’s society and has educated generations of groundbreaking artists, performers, designers and creative leaders for more than 141 years.

After being granted university status in 1987, University of the Arts became the largest institution of its kind in the nation, offering programs in design, fine arts, media arts, crafts, music, dance, theater and writing. It now features 30 undergraduate arts majors, 15 graduate programs and the nation’s first PhD program in Creativity.

Project description

The mission of the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program is to build awareness of the Library’s educational initiatives through delivery of TPS professional development and academic courses, by design of curriculum and apps/online interactives using primary sources from the Library’s collections, and/or through research on the classroom use of primary sources.

As a part of the newly formed TPS Consortium, UArts’ primary focus is the development of curriculum and resources for educators as deployed through a range of activities including: the creation of resources and teaching tools for teachers across all subject areas, and the deployment of professional development activities. Our target audience is intentionally broad, seeking to serve teachers of all grades and subject areas, as well as the partners within the TPS consortium. We will welcome teachers at all grade levels and subject areas as well as administrators and librarians to connect with us and take advantage of resources and tools. Our network of partnerships with schools and school districts, as well as our own internal list of over 5,000 teachers, allows us to disseminate our programming broadly in the greater Philadelphia region and beyond.

Our curriculum units will be tied to specific arts disciplines, and will connect to resources found within the digitized collection of the Library of Congress, and then springboard to other primary sources available on the web, as well as items in collections of institutions within the United States. This comprehensive approach allows educators the opportunity to work with primary sources that are relevant to their classrooms and their students’ needs.
