Organization description

The State Historical Society of Iowa is a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, the state agency with a mission to empower Iowa to build and sustain culturally vibrant communities by connecting Iowans to the people, places and points of pride that define our state. The State Historical Society has been a trustee of Iowa’s historical legacy since 1857. With a dual mission of preservation and education, it maintains a museum, two research centers, archives, preservation office, and eight historic sites, and its vast collection encompasses more than 209 million content pages and artifacts. The Society preserves and provides access to Iowa’s historical resources through a variety of statewide programs, exhibitions and projects while serving as an advocate for Iowa’s past and connector to the future. The Society also provides history-focused educational programming and resources for K-12 students and teachers.

Project description

The State Historical Society of Iowa, in partnership with the Iowa Department of Education, has created 60+ Primary Source Sets for K-12 audiences that connect to the Iowa Core Social Studies Standards. For K-5 audiences, the Society created Read Iowa History lesson units, which are based on the elementary Primary Source Sets, and connect to Iowa Core Literacy and Social Studies Standards. Additionally, Goldie’s History Kits were created, which include the Read Iowa History lessons and related storybooks, photos of objects from the State Historical Museum of Iowa’s collections and Think Like… cards. The Society is now creating K-12 teacher professional development and a website hub to help educators gain access to tools for using inquiry and primary sources.
