Organization description

Mohawk Trail and Hawlemont Regional School Districts are combined districts representing 8 small rural towns (Ashfield, Buckland, Charlemont, Colrain, Hawley, Heath, Plainfield, Shelburne) in rural northwestern Massachusetts. We currently operate 4 elementary schools (Colrain Central School, Sanderson Academy, Buckland Shelburne Elementary, and Hawlemont Elementary) and a 7-12 Middle/High School (Mohawk Trail Regional School). Our district is the largest in the state geographically, with one of the smallest populations. Our district contains a business and tourist district in Shelburne Falls, along with farming, recreation, and the arts.

Project description

Our ultimate project goal is to increase our students’ interest and engagement in their communities. We plan to do this by  engaging teachers around our region in learning about our local history and integrating it into their classrooms across grade levels and subject areas, through workshops where they’ll create or modify classroom activities to involve community stories and organizations. We began in the Mohawk Trail/Hawlemont District with a school-based workshop after which a few brave teachers signed up for a longer project. After working through that process, the workshop was redeveloped for a regional audience. It was run in Spring 2025 with a small cohort and will be running again in July 2025 to finish out the grant cycle.
