Organization description

The Maine Department of Education, in collaboration with educators, schools, districts and communities Statewide, strives to provide all Maine students access to educational experiences, PreK through adult, that lead to their success in life and career.

The Maine DOE is an agency of the State of Maine that administers both state education subsidy and state and federal grant programs; coordinates the authoring of the rules for Maine State education statutes passed by the Maine State Legislature; provides professional development, information, supports and resources, as well as a system for educator credentialing; and leads many collaborative opportunities and partnerships in support of local schools and districts.

With students at the center of every decision, the Department’s goal is to promote educational experiences that engage and challenge every student by providing individualized learning opportunities that enhance student learning, and increase student achievement.

Project description

The Celebrating Rural Maine project is a three-part professional learning series that aims to engage rural teachers in a deep examination of Maine’s history. While using history as a foundation, the profession development takes an interdisciplinary approach as it:

  • Connects teachers with the Library of Congress’s rural interdisciplinary collections and other supporting organizations to situate local narratives in the larger human experience,
  • Supports teachers in the design and implementation of works of public value that connect rural students to their community
  • Provides online asynchronous (Part A), online synchronous (Part B), and site-based (Part C) opportunities

This program provides dynamic, flexible learning options, supporting educators in outdoor learning, climate education, Wabanaki and African American studies, public history, and career preparedness. Explore place-based education, Maine’s geographic history, innovative teaching models, and more.
