The Lou Frey Institute at the University of Central Florida is proud to share a new resource, “Policy, Poetry, and Primary Sources”. In these secondary lesson plans, educators will experience a new interdisciplinary approach to civics instruction by blending poetry analysis, primary-source investigation, and landmark Supreme Court case studies into a cohesive learning experience. Integrating the analytical skills of poetry into social studies lessons about landmark cases gives students opportunities to evaluate poetic works within their historical context. It will give new meaning and understanding to students who would otherwise struggle to draw conclusions on themes and issues of a specific time period. In addition to analyzing poetry for common themes, metaphors, and other literary devices, the lessons will use primary sources from the Digital Archive Collection of the Library of Congress. By connecting poetry and primary sources to the policies outlined in landmark Supreme Court cases, students will enhance their critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and creativity. All lessons are digitized in student-friendly e-modules for a self-directed learning approach or a traditional teaching method led by an educator.
