Organization description

We are a non-profit organization committed to supporting music education based on the philosophy of composer and educator, Zoltan Kodaly, which envisions music for all based in singing, using folk song materials for early instruction, with the goal of active music making and music literacy for all.

Project description

We researched songs from the midwest region within the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center to include in the American Folk Song Collection (https://kodalycollection.org). Launched in 2004, this free site contains field recordings, scores, musical analysis, background information and game directions. The site allows teachers to search by any combination of more than 20 categories including region, subject, ethnicity, song type, grade level and musical characteristics.

We also researched background information to provide context for introducing the songs to students. The information included Library of Congress field notes, blog postings and TPS postings, as well as visual content (photos, maps, illustrations) from the Library.

Finally, we created a new area on our site that features primary source activities/lesson plans for folk songs on our site. These lesson plans are being added to the TPS Consortium Created Materials site.
