Organization description

KID smART is a New Orleans-based nonprofit arts education organization that partners with K-12 schools to provide high-quality, arts-integrated learning experiences for students and professional development for educators. Through its AXIS professional development program, KID smART trains classroom teachers to use the arts as a tool for deeper learning across all subject areas, building both student engagement and teacher capacity. Since its founding, KID smART has served thousands of students and educators across Orleans Parish and the surrounding region.

Project description

KID smART’s Teaching with Primary Sources project, Everyday People: Fostering Empathy Using Primary Sources, delivered arts-integrated professional development to New Orleans educators through a series of four Small Learning Group sessions held between November 2025 and April 2026. The program used Library of Congress primary sources alongside arts-based strategies — including primary source observation routines, narrative writing, dramatization, and oral storytelling — to help classroom teachers build students’ empathy, perspective-taking, and civic understanding. Sixteen educators from nine Orleans Parish schools participated, representing grade levels from Kindergarten through 8th grade across a range of content areas.
