Organization description

The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is an educational agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia offering programs and resources about early American history through its museums – Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.

Our Mission

The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation shall foster through its living-history museums – Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown – an awareness and understanding of the early history, settlement, and development of the United States through the convergence of American Indian, European, and African cultures and the enduring legacies bequeathed to the nation.

Project description

At the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, we seek to help students and visitors see themselves in history and recognize that the past was shaped by people not unlike themselves. With support from the Library of Congress TPS grant, our People of the Past project will create a digital resource that brings to life the experiences of both well-known and everyday individuals from the 17th and 18th centuries and explores their legacies.

Through a series of virtual and in-person teacher professional development sessions, we will showcase the resource and offer strategies for incorporating personal stories into their curriculum. By engaging with diverse stories and primary sources, students will develop skills essential to understanding history and their place within it, including empathy and critical thinking.
