Organization description

iCivics was founded in 2009 by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor to transform civic education and rebuild civic strength through digital games and lesson plans. iCivics is the country’s largest provider of civic education content and is currently used by up to 145,000 educators and 9 million students annually. All iCivics teaching resources are free, nonpartisan, and available online at icivics.org.

Project description

TPS has funded three projects with iCivics:

(1) DBQuests – DBQuest supports students by developing the skills for in-depth primary source analysis and inquiry. DBQuest introduces students to major questions in civics and history. A “Big Question” acts as guiding light for deep examination of three selected primary resources. Each document challenges students to dig into the text itself and find the relevant information through document–based supporting questions.

(2) Exploring Primary Sources Mini-Site: This site serves as a resource hub for innovative products, accessible professional development, and more! This collection of products were developed by a number of organizations and supported by grants from the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Program. Each item is designed to engage students with meaningful opportunities to learn through primary sources from the Library’s online collections and beyond.

(3) Private i History Detectives: Private i History Detectives is a supplemental K-5 curriculum. Organized by grade-level and topic, these whole class mystery-themed units make teaching social studies fun. Help your students put on their historian hats as they develop life-long inquiry skills to solve each mystery. Private i History Detectives is state-standards aligned and easy to use. Private i History Detectives is the next evolution of
History’s Mysteries, a curriculum created by Laurie Risler and Kelley Brown that previously received a TPS Regional Grant.
