Organization description

Formed in 1996, the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Foundation works to preserves what remains of the World War II Japanese American confinement site in Park County, Wyoming, and to tell the stories of the more than 14,000 people unjustly incarcerated at the site. In August of 2011, the Foundation opened the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, a world class museum dedicated to teaching this story to future generations.

Project description

The Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation hosted two one-day professional development workshops for 6th-12th grade educators from central and northwest Wyoming. These workshops provided teachers with primary source materials to support instruction on Japanese American incarceration within the context of national, state, and local history. Participants engaged with a variety of primary sources from both the Library of Congress and the Heart Mountain collection. Participants also had the opportunity to engage with a former incarceree, providing a valuable firsthand account that deepens understanding and enriches primary source analysis. In addition to historical content, the workshop emphasized place-based learning. Educators explored the historical connections between their communities and Heart Mountain by examining both archival documents and lived experiences.
