Project description

Author’s Journey to Powerful Pairings is helping educators pair primary sources with nonfiction narrative children’s books as a method for teaching history, inquiry, writing and research.  Teacher and instructional coach Kelley Brown along with methods instructor and curriculum writer Laurie Risler, and children’s author Claudia Friddell host a two-day summer institute for twenty-five K-12 educators focused on pairing inquiry and primary sources to support the integration of nonfiction narrative in interdisciplinary K-12 teaching. Brown, Risler, and Friddell produce five inquiry-based lessons using primary sources from the Library of Congress to pair with five of Friddell’s nonfiction narrative texts. They also produce a primary source strategy guide with adaptable classroom practices. As part of Powerful Pairings, program participants integrate one of the lessons or a modified version in their classrooms. They provide feedback and meet with Brown and Risler periodically during that time period.  The team also works with preservice teachers to introduce the primary source-based strategies.  In March, Friddell gives author talks to students in the partner districts as well as partners for events at the Massachusetts Center for the Book. All lesson materials are permanently available for free on a project website and through the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources teachers’ network.
