Berwyn South School District 100 serves approximately 3000 PK-8th grade students in eight schools in Berwyn, Illinois

Project description

Berwyn South School District 100, in collaboration with The Barat Education Foundation and the Center on Representative Government (CORG) at Indiana University, hosted a pilot OAV Civics Summer Camp for students entering grades 5 through 8. This innovative weeklong program introduced students to a civics curriculum grounded in the Inquiry Arc and built entirely around Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) resources.

Each lesson engaged students in inquiry-based learning, incorporating primary sources and hands-on activities to spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and encourage civic action. Camp activities also featured content from Engaging Congress and Action Citizen, two interactive programs developed by CORG through a Library of Congress TPS grant.

The camp culminated in an OAV Civic Action Summit, where students showcased their community improvement projects to an audience of peers, families, educators, local leaders, and community members.

The second phase of this initiative will use insights from the pilot to develop a scalable OAV Civics Summer Camp model, with plans for implementation in middle schools across Illinois and Indiana beginning in summer 2026.
