Project description

From FableVision Studios’ audiyo-yo division comes the “LOC Mixtape” podcast, highlighting some of the “best, craziest, and most inspiring” pieces of music from the Library of Congress archives. This podcast connects historians, musicians, and performance artists to find out who made these musical selections and why. Each season of the podcast comprises four episodes, each around 35 minutes long.

The “Library of Congress Mixtape” project invites and empowers high school students to engage with audio primary sources in innovative ways and leverage their interpretation skills to make their own creative works. In addition to the podcast, high school teachers and students have access to a companion curriculum program developed by Maryland Public Television in partnership with Carolyn Bennett, former Teacher-in-Residence at the Library of Congress. The materials enable students to engage in hands-on work in examining primary sources and fostering their own creative works.

The four episodes of the first season include:

Dead Horse Shanty digs into the “Dead Horse Shanty,” (also known as “Poor Old Man”) a truly unusual sea shanty that was at the center of an old-school sailor party. Our guests are Stephen Winick from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and musical artist Dr. Julian Saporiti, who’s also known for his No No Boy project.

Sweet Babe of Mine remixes a beautiful lullaby sung by sixteen-year-old Margie Maddox in her Texas high school’s coat closet in 1939. Our guests are Jesse Hocking from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and musical duo Elizabeth Mitchell and Daniel Littleton of the band Ida.

You Hurt My Feelings features the incredible voice of Mary Lane, whose performance of “You Hurt My Feelings” was recorded as part of the Chicago Ethnic Arts project in 1977. Our guests are Michelle Stefano from the American Folklife Center, Dr. Allie Martin, Assistant Professor at Dartmouth College, and Chicago-based musical artist Bethany Thomas.

Señora Sanata (episode releasing December 2025) will feature a Federal Writer’s Project recording of Adelpha Pollato, a Cuban immigrant singing songs she grew up with in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida. Our guests are Dr. Benjamin Lapidus of John Jay College and groundbreaking Afro-Cuban artist Daymé Arocena.
